Engine Tune-up — Drive Belts Inspection / Alternator Belt Adjustment

5-6prose procedure

Drive belt table covers Alternator, A/C Compressor and P/S belts (vehicles equipped with A/C and power steering).

Drive Belts Inspection

Drive Belts Deflection: (When applying a force of 9.8 N (10 kg, 22 lbs))
① Alternator Belt
Used Belt9-11 mm (0.35-0.43 in.)
New Belt7-9 mm (0.28-0.35 in.)
② A/C Compressor Belt
Used Belt9-11 mm (0.35-0.43 in.)
New Belt7-9 mm (0.28-0.35 in.)
③ P/S Belt
Used Belt9-12 mm (0.35-0.47 in.)
New Belt7-10 mm (0.28-0.39 in.)

Alternator Belt Adjustment

  1. 1
Apply a force of 98 N (10 kg, 22 lb) and measure the deflection between the alternator pulley and the crankshaft pulley. Deflection: 9-11 mm (0.35-0.43 in.).
On a brand-new belt, the deflection should be 7-9 mm (0.28-0.35 in.) when first measured.
Front engine view for alternator belt adjustment showing where to measure belt deflection between the alternator and crankshaft pulleys, with torque callouts for the alternator nut and through bolt.
  2. 2
Loosen the alternator nut and through bolt.
  3. 3
Move the alternator by turning the adjust nut to obtain the proper belt tension, then retighten the bolt and nut.
  4. 4
Recheck the deflection of the belt.
