Pump Belt Adjustment

A properly adjustment belt should deflect about 9-12 mm (0.35-0.47 in) when you push on it mid-way between the pulleys with a force of about 98 N (10 kg; 22 lbs).

    Loosen the pump special bolt and flange bolt.
    Power steering pump being pried away from the engine with a pry bar to adjust belt tension; shows the pump mounting with the flange bolt and special bolt locations.

    Pry pump away from the engine to get the proper tension, then retighten the special bolt and flange bolt.
  3. 3
    Start the engine and turn the steering wheel from lock-to-lock several times, then recheck the belt tension.

Rack Guide Adjustment

  1. 1
    Remove the gearbox splash splash.

    Loosen the lock nut on the rack guide screw with the special tool as shown.

    Tighten the guide screw until it compresses the spring and seats against the guide, then loosen it.
  4. 4
    Check the steering effort as described on page 11-28.
